The
town of Cross Plains is located in the southeast corner of Callahan County, Texas,
at the crossroads of Hwy 36 and SH 206. Our town has an estimated population
of 1,063. Our
community is visited often each year by fans of Robert E. Howard (author of
Conan the Barbarian) and by large numbers of resident and non-resident Texas
deer, turkey, dove and quail hunters. In
1878, the United States Government granted a post office to Cross Plains,
which was named for the crossings of stagecoaches and military roads prior to
the Civil War. It is said that Robert E. Lee and U.S. Grant camped with their
troops at a grove of live oak trees on the banks of Turkey Creek, which is
now known as Treadway Park. East and West Caddo Peaks, located 5 miles west,
were used as landmarks by early Indians, soldiers and also by government
surveying crews. The town moved from the west banks of Turkey Creek to its
present site in January 1911, in anticipation of the coming railroad. On
January 11, 1912, the first train arrived, the Texas Central, which was soon
to become the Missouri- Kansas-Texas Railroad. Recently,
voters passed a $1.1 million bond package for new classrooms and gymnasium
for the Cross Plains Independent School District. The CPISD has an average
enrollment of approximately 455 students. The
Chamber of Commerce is active and recently opened an office on Main Street.
We have banking services, varied retail stores, restaurants (homestyle and
fast foods), churches, medical services, a nursing home, service stations and
motel. Our library has approximately 8,500 volumes. An attractive feature to
living in town is that we do not have city property taxes! Located
7 miles east is Lakewood Country Club, which offers 9-holes of golfing
pleasure, picnic sites, fishing, a swimming pool and a clubhouse for meetings
and social events. Nearby
Rising Star Golf Club is located twelve miles east of town on Texas highway
36 and features an eighteen hole championship course among rolling hills and
oak trees. A driving range is also available there. We
have a large number of resident and non-resident Texas hunters because our
area offers some of the finest Texas hunting to be found! Deer, quail, dove,
and turkey hunting abounds. Many private ranches offer fine Texas hunting
leases for deer, turkey, dove, and quail and often make the availability of
leases known via our Chamber of Commerce. We
appreciate the hunters and sportspersons who visit our town every year. Cross
Plains, Texas hunters are welcomed every year with a special day of
recognition as well as free contests for hunting rifles and/or shotguns
sponsored by local businesses. Come visit us for your next Texas hunting
season! We
are the hometown to the notable Robert
E. Howard who authored Conan the Barbarian. Robert E. Howard's "Conan the
Barbarian" is a classic character that transcends generations. Robert E.
Howard lived here with his family from 1919 until his death in 1936. The
Robert E. Howard house has been restored and is open to the public as a
museum. Cross
Plains, Texas represents a community of concerned citizens who share common
values for community progress and improvement. A place to relax and enjoy
life, we are a caring community looking towards the future. Best
