Project Pride of Cross Plains Restores the Robert E. Howard Home.

Project Pride is a community organization in Cross Plains, Texas, which bought and restored the Robert E. Howard home (with financial support from REH fans around the world, and from the late Alla Ray Morris, who had inherited the rights to REH's works). They now operate the Home as a museum in REH's memory, and they love to have an opportunity to show it off for visitors. Bob's room is particularly well done. It is not open on a regular basis, so it is best to make arrangements in advance, by writing

Each June, Project Pride and the City of Cross Plains sponsor Robert E. Howard Remembrance Day, during which special postal cancellations and commemorative T-shirts are offered, tours of the home are available, and the Cross Plains Library puts on display some of their holdings of REH original manuscripts. It's a great holiday for a Howard fan. While much has been done in the ten years since Project Pride first bought the house, a lot remains, and Cross Plains is not a wealthy community. Any support from REH fans -- either through joining Project Pride, or through donations earmarked for the Howard Home -- helps with the ongoing efforts to preserve Howard's memory in his hometown.

Project Pride Is a non-profit organization intent on keeping Cross Plains a clean, attractive, and developing community and in preserving and documenting the history and heritage of the area.

Because Robert E. Howard is a noted author of fantasy and adventure stories, including the world-famous Conan, the group has purchased his home in order to preserve it. Here Howard lived with his mother and father from 1919 until his death in 1936. Here he created most of his works.

Ruth Stein, in a Literary Tour Guide to the United States (Wm. Morrow & Co., 1979)
wrote: "Standing in a house where one's favorite author lived, or seeing the desk at which he or she wrote, or visiting the haunts the writer once knew establishes a certain kinship with him."

Throughout the years, more and more people are visiting Cross Plains to see where Robert Howard lived and wrote. We have welcomed these guests and hope to welcome many more. They have shared with us their Howard collections, their own publications, their enthusiasm, their talents, and their funds in order to commemorate Howard and to help in confirming his place in the literary world.

In opening the Howard house, we cannot duplicate all the furnishings. Instead, friends in the community have graciously donated furnishings of the 1920's and 1930's

Above all, we have tried to capture the mood and spirit of the environment of the home and the period. In Howard's room, however, we have stayed as close as possible to the type of furnishings and to the crowded conditions, in which Howard lived and worked.

We are proud of this man whose growing fame has brought worldwide attention to Cross Plains. It is our dream to restore the Howard home and to make it possible for other dreamers to walk here. We are proud of our community for supporting this endeavor.

We welcome anyone interested in the purposes of Project Pride to join our organization. Membership is $3.00 per year for individuals or $5.00 for a family.

Every donation helps us to complete work on the house, which stands as a memorial to an era and to a world-acclaimed writer of fantasy.
